U-Haul 2016 Canadian Destination City No. 5: Ottawa

Jun 26, 2017

Ottawa registers as the No. 5 U-Haul Canadian Destination City, maintaining the ranking it held on the previous year’s list, according to the latest U-Haul migrations trends report.

Ottawa enjoyed a sizeable 13.7 percent increase in year-over-year arrivals in 2016 to comfortably remain one of the top-five busiest Canadian markets for incoming U-Haul trucks.

U-Haul Destination Cities are ranked according to the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul truck rentals to a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities do not account for departing traffic and thus do not necessarily reflect growth like U-Haul Growth Cities. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of do-it-yourself movers coming into a community.

Appeal of the Capital City

“Ottawa is an affordable, clean and safe city,” stated U-Haul Company of Western Quebec president Claude Boucher, whose territory includes Ottawa and parts of southeastern Ontario. “Do-it-yourself movers from all around the world are moving here. U-Haul is continuously growing its dealer network with new truck and trailer sharing locations, and adding U-Haul stores to properly meet the high demand of moving equipment and self-storage in the Ottawa area.”

U-Haul has two Company-owned stores and 14 independent dealers within the nation’s capital. It also offers many more locations to fulfill the needs of suburbs outside Ottawa. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Ottawa at uhaul.com/locations.

“Gearing up for 2017’s eventful year-long celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, filled with novel attractions and activities, 2016 was a busy year for Ottawa,” noted Michael Crockatt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “As the hub of Canadian government institutions, and vibrant youth-centric technology and tourism industries, the city is more than ever positioning itself as an energetic and buzzing capital, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world every year.”

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.

What They are Saying about Ottawa

“Ottawa is a government town. Many people move to the city each year because of the federal jobs offered during election season. As a whole, Ottawa is busier than it has ever been.” — Claude Boucher, president, U-Haul Company of Western Quebec
