Migration Trends: Kitchener is No. 9 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Kitchener is the No. 9 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, the same spot it held in last year’s rankings.

Kitchener saw a 19 percent year-over-year decrease in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017, but still remained one of the top 10 busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers.

“Kitchener is my hometown, and I’m not surprised to see it continue to place as a U-Haul destination city,” stated David Anstett, U-Haul Company of Western Ontario president.

“It’s a place you can find big-city amenities with small-town friendliness. The Waterloo Region is a wonderful place to raise children, and it’s close to the jobs and excitement of Toronto. Kitchener has become a middle point for many commuters because it has affordable housing and new residences to accommodate a growing population. It may be a commuter city, but we also have job growth. We’re a major player in the technology industry and have cutting-edge universities that bring in fresh faces every year.”

Moving Season in Kitchener

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul released its top 25 Canadian Growth Cities for 2017 in January.
