U-Haul® continues to be recognized for making Team Member health and wellness a top priority, this time being named No. 15 on the 2020 Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America by Healthiest Employers®.
After numerous awards on the state level, U-Haul is now being tabbed for national honors as one of the healthiest employers in America. The do-it-yourself moving and self-storage leader, founded in 1945, was recently honored as the 2020 Phoenix Business Journal Healthiest Employer in the extra-large category for Arizona, and consistently earns top marks in other state and local health rankings.
“In the face of a global pandemic, U-Haul continues to invest in the health and well-being of our Team Members,” said Jessica Lopez, U-Haul Chief of Staff.
“We know each person is facing different challenges this year and U-Haul continues to emphasize healthy living by providing benefits and programs that assist our Team Members and their families. We want to empower our Team Members to be the best versions of themselves. If we take care of our Team Members, they will take care of our customers.”

National Recognition
Winners of the 2020 Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America awards are selected based on their Healthiest Employers Index, which is based on six factors: vision, cultures/engagement, learning, expertise, metrics, and technology.
Springbuk® evaluates each applicant using its Health Intelligence platform — powerful, AI-driven technology that applies proprietary algorithms to disparate health and related data, generating insights and actionable opportunities to save money and prevent disease.
“Each company on this list can be proud of their investment in health and wellbeing and the impact it has on the lives of its employees and our communities,” said Haley Elmore, Healthy Employers® program coordinator. “Not only are these companies demonstrating care for their people, but those businesses are thriving by having more engaged, focused, and productive employees.”
Prioritizing Health
U-Haul is constructing a 54,208-square-foot conference and fitness center in Midtown Phoenix, where it has been headquartered since 1967. Slated for completion by summer 2021, the two-story building will provide the 1,800 Team Members on its corporate campus easy access to exercise, receive medical care and other wellness services just steps from their work stations. The conference and fitness center features a state-of-the-art gym, basketball court, full scope medical and physical therapy clinic.
Monique Wantland, U-Haul wellness program manager, noted the Company’s “Healthier You” initiative pivoted in 2020 to address the challenges prompted by COVID-19. In addition to new programs for diabetes management and expectant parents, U-Haul expanded its gym membership reimbursement to include the use of fitness apps as some of its 30,300 Team Members across the U.S. and Canada worked – and worked out – remotely.
“This year has really changed the way people were approaching health and wellness,” Wantland said. “We had to make sure we were being inclusive and supporting everyone and adapt to the changing needs of our team.”
Since last year, U-Haul has also addressed the mental health of Team Members and their households by adding the “You Matter” program and endorsed healthier choices by bolstering its long time nicotine cessation program.
