North Carolina is the No. 4 growth state in America, according to the U-Haul® Growth Index analyzing customer moves during 2022.
People arriving in North Carolina in one-way U-Haul trucks fell by 1% over 2021, but departures dropped by nearly 4%.
Due to the greater year-over-year drop in departures, North Carolina netted a larger percentage of arrivals to climb 15 spots from its No. 19 growth ranking in 2021. Do-it-yourself movers arriving in North Carolina accounted for more than 50.4% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of North Carolina (49.6% departures) to make it a top-10 growth state for the fifth time since 2015, when it was the No. 1 growth state.
“With attractive job opportunities, low crime rates and our Southern charm, people are flocking to North Carolina to raise their families,” stated Brandy Christie, U-Haul Company of Raleigh president.
“North Carolina is great for people who like to spend time outdoors. We have everything from beautiful coastal areas and the Outer Banks in the eastern part of the state, to the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the west. Living here is affordable and offers access to just about anything families could want or need.”
The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled according to the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a city or state, versus departing from that city or state, in a calendar year. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.
Texas is the No. 1 growth state for the fifth time since 2016. Florida, South Carolina and Virginia round out the top five growth states. California ranks 50th and Illinois 49th for the third year in a row, indicating those states saw the largest net losses of one-way U-Haul trucks.
North Carolina’s top growth market is Raleigh-Durham. Other notable net-gain cities include Boone, Greenville, Leland, Greensboro, Chapel Hill, High Point, Asheville, Winterville, New Bern, Goldsboro, Ocean Isle Beach, Sanford, Garner, Hendersonville and Cornelius.
While U-Haul migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well states and cities are both attracting and maintaining residents.
