Inventive and Inexpensive Ideas for National Hobby Month

In case you weren’t aware, January is National Hobby Month. What better way to kick off the New Year than to share old and new interests?

The great thing about hobbies is that we do them on our time and often for as long we choose. They typically help us feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, or at the very least just serve as a lot of fun.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start when it comes to picking a new hobby. Here at U-Haul Company, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite pastimes to get you started. The best part is these are inexpensive endeavors. You may already have the supplies you need from a recent move.

Arts & Crafts

If you’re looking to try your hand at some DIY crafts, cardboard might not be the first material you would grab. However, we have some awesome tips and examples of things you can make with simple moving boxes and a few other basic tools and supplies.

Here you’ll see how to build some eye-catching picture frames, shelves and even a lamp out of cardboard. For those who want a little less form and a little more function, check out these great under-the-bed storage organizers.

We’re also less than a month away from Valentine’s Day. That gives you another reason to try a new potential craft. Again, some leftover moving supplies and you’ll be on your way to making a Valentine’s mobile for your house, classroom or office.

Games

With just a little more than a week before the Big Game, where the pro football championship will be decided in Glendale, Ariz., you’re probably already planning your menu and entertaining setup if you’re hosting a party.

Another great addition would be making a Game Day Bingo Board to add to the excitement of rooting for your team.

Gardening

It won’t be long before the weather starts warming up, and that means planting colorful flowers, mulching the yard and getting your vegetable garden ready. Gardening could be a great way to watch the fruits of your labor … literally.

If you’re looking for a sustainable and cheap way to start, delve into that stash of moving boxes once again. This post shows you how to make planter boxes and also how to use cardboard as a natural weed barrier if planting in the ground.

These are just a few ideas to get you started on a potential new hobby without breaking the bank or killing all your spare time. It’s often said that a lack of time and money are the main reasons people don’t take up new hobbies, so hopefully these ideas will inspire you to try give it a go.
