Migration Trends: Montreal is No. 6 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Jun 22, 2018

Montreal is the No. 6 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, sliding three spots from its ranking last year.

Montreal’s one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017 fell 23 percent year-over-year, but it still remained one of the top 10 busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers.

“Montreal has a strong economy and reasonable cost of living,” stated Patrick Primeau, U-Haul Company of Eastern Quebec president. “Compared to most other cities of its caliber, rent prices are low. Montreal is also the perfect size. It’s a walkable city, with the help of public transportation, but is still large enough to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in North America.

“Great things are happening in Montreal. The city has nearly four centuries worth of culture, and many of our historic buildings remain intact. Montreal is also a bilingual and culture-filled city. People from all over the world move here and bring their unique way of life with them.”

U-Haul has seven Company-owned stores and 24 independent neighborhood dealers currently operating in the Montreal city limits. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Montreal at uhaul.com/locations.

Moving Season in Montreal

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Vancouver is the No. 10 Destination City, Kitchener No. 9, Victoria No. 8 and Hamilton No. 7. Find Destination Cities 11-50 below and be sure to check back throughout the countdown.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul released its top 25 Canadian Growth Cities for 2017 in January.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 10 Canadian provinces and 50 states in the U.S. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.
