Andre House, U-Haul Fight Hunger in Phoenix Community

Sep 10, 2019

U-Haul volunteers teamed up with charity partner Andre House on Aug. 8 to serve Phoenix residents dealing with hunger and dehydration.

Andre House feeds hundreds of hungry people in the Valley every day. It serves more than 500 meals daily while providing free services for those in need of clothes, hygiene products and spiritual direction.

When volunteers serve at Andre House, the objective is to provide guests the opportunity to experience genuine care and hospitality. Volunteers are also responsible for setting up chairs and tables, and handling cleaning.

U-Haul Team Members were tasked with prepping ingredients such as bell peppers, tomatoes and grapes for burrito night — a popular meal at Andre House. For burrito night, guests receive a tortilla with a selection of sides so they can build their own plate. In addition to drinks, guests received ice cream as a special treat.

Many U-Haul volunteers came out to support the cause, which falls in the Company’s primary community service scope of helping organizations that assist people in meeting their most basic human needs (specifically food, clothing and shelter).

Alexander Kartman, sales manager in the U-Haul marketing department, noted the importance of working together to serve those less fortunate.

“There are a lot of negative things in this world,” Kartman said. “It’s great that U-Haul is helping the community.”

Team Members worked the food line, allowing U-Haul faces to be the first people saw upon entering the dining room. While there was a great turnout of volunteers, many dedicated Phoenicians visit Andre House every week to feed the hungry.
