U-Haul Makes Special Lunch Delivery to U.S. Vets Campus

Apr 23, 2020

U-Haul recently made the most of a wonderful service opportunity to prepare and deliver lunch to veterans at the U.S. Vets campus in Phoenix.

Originally planned as an on-site BBQ for veterans and staff at the campus, current COVID-19 challenges forced Team U-Haul to come up with another plan of action in order to get lunch to this special group of patriots. Rising to meet the challenge was the Anna Mary’s Café staff at corporate headquarters on the U-Haul Midtown Campus.

“Our Team Members were excited to be given the opportunity to give back to a group that has given us so much,” stressed Bob Kohrs, manager of Anna Mary’s Café. “Due to the situation we are going through at this moment, we put our full prep and catering teams on this very important event.”

Decorated History

U-Haul was founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife in 1945 and was built through the efforts of service members returning home from the war. These veterans went on to become many of the first U-Haul Team Members, neighborhood dealers as well as customers seeking to move their families to a better life.

Team U-Haul worked to make 150 sack lunches for U.S. Vets event. Along with the turkey, ham and roast beef sandwiches, lunch also included pasta salad, potato salad, fresh fruit and a homemade cookie.

“The team took great pride in knowing that they were feeding a group of men and women who are responsible for preserving the freedoms we all enjoy today,” Kohrs noted. “The sandwiches going out were the best we’ve ever produced. I hope they were enjoyed as much as the pleasure we had in preparing them.”

U.S. Vets provides transitional and permanent housing to veterans, as well as providing veterans’ families with financial assistance. Currently, U.S. Vets serves over 1,200 Phoenix veterans each year.

One veteran who received lunch remarked that he really appreciated learning that U-Haul was founded by a veteran, thanking Team Members for including postcards with the lunches that shared the Company’s story.

Veteran Initiative

U-Haul supports veteran organizations as part of its community service objectives. The Company also actively recruits veterans, and gives them preference in the hiring process. Since 1945, service members have helped U-Haul meet its commitment to North America’s self-moving needs.
