Reclaimed Counter Tops and Detroit Determination 04-22-2013

Apr 22, 2013

Last week, we introduced the general manager of U-Haul Moving and Storage of New Center Detroit: Anthony Jones. This week, we are going to show off some the interesting revitalized features that Anthony and his team will be seeing on a daily basis.

Showroom Counters

It may seem silly to rave about counter tops, but I’m going to. These counter tops are beautiful. Talk about reduce, recycle and reuse! These counter tops are made from the reclaimed maple wood flooring that was removed from the building due to water damage. What an awesome way to revitalize this building with its own reclaimed wood floors!

Though the counters look amazing, Tony Jay with dado Custom Woodworks wasn’t satisfied that the counters were a mere one-sixteenth inch from perfect. He’s spending extra time to make sure that the counters at our Midtown Detroit location are of the highest quality.

The lights above the counters are installed and running to showcase the gorgeous reclaimed wood as it should be.

Third-floor Storage

The third floor storage area is really shining. The crew has been hard at work removing the construction dust and debris from the storage rooms. All the rooms have been wiped down, swept and mopped. Little rubber grommets are being placed on exposed screws to make all surfaces smooth and safe for our customers. On top of all that, every window sill has been scrubbed to look like new.

Removing years of grime off the wood floors was tricky, but our construction team discovered that using a black scrub pad worked wonders. By the end of the week, the floors will be so clean you could eat off them … but we’d still recommend you use a plate.

Remember how we restored the brick in the showroom bathroom? The construction team is going to try that with the bathroom on the third floor. We’ll let you know how that turns out once it’s complete.

Fourth-floor Flu Bug

What’s that saying? “Feed a fever; Starve a cold”? Well, whatever it is, our poor guys were fighting off the Flu last week. Of course, nothing can keep Detroit down, and they beat the nasty Flu bug and were back to work by the end of the week. Great job, team! That determined spirit is the same that helped found our company in 1945.

With the Flu behind them, the team went to work on the pipes. After eight years of not being used, the pipes had some built-up scaling and debris in the system. Our construction team plans to run new pipes to take care of this foggy-water problem. Nothing less than crystal clear water will do for our customers.

Load/Unload Area

The roll-up door has been painted outside and the stripes are painted on the interior concrete floor. A parking block, steel steps and dock bumpers are all that remains to be done before our loading area is complete.

This blog was created to let the community know that U-Haul is in Detroit, and to share our plans with you and to get input from the community. We want to hear from you. Tell us what you like and don’t like about our posts, building plans or anything else you want to share about Detroit. We are excited to be part of the Detroit community and want to learn from you!

Next post, 4/29.
