Haunted Houses and Halloween Fun

Oct 24, 2012

Looking for some places to have the bejeezus scared out of you—and even help out some good causes? The D certainly doesn’t disappoint, offering several haunted houses and other spooky events to get you in the Halloween spirit. Here’s a sampling of fun activities.

Detroit's Urban Legends logo
Detroit’s Urban Legends is guaranteed to frighten you, but it’s for a good cause.

In Midtown, Detroit’s Urban Legends Haunted House is back for its 7th year of frightening people to the point of tears (they like to remind people that one person left in an ambulance last year). Despite the creepy stories and ghoulish creatures designed to scare you half to death, this haunted house is for a good cause. Cass Community Social Services puts on the haunted house at the Cass Community United Methodist Church at the corner of Cass Ave. and Selden St., and the proceeds go to programs that provide support for homeless mothers and children. The haunted house is open this Friday-Sunday, October 26-28, and again on the 30th and 31st. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12, though it’s not recommended for kids under 8. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

Hellbent III

The Russell Industrial Center offers its own version of haunted fun with Hellbent III, this Saturday, October 27th. It’s a big party with a spooky twist, or to quote the organizers directly, it’s “10,000+ square feet of freakishly fun Halloween horrors!!!” Guests can ride up an old freight elevator operated by a demon, and experience some amazing artwork created by the center’s tenants. There’s live music all night and a zombie carnival offering the chance to win prizes. Costumes are encouraged! Tickets are $15 in advance here or $20 at the door. Click here for more info.

Haunted in the House
Haunted in the House raises money for the Detroit Opera House.

The Detroit Opera House is hosting its 4th annual costume party this Friday the 26th. Haunted in the House allows you to celebrate Halloween a few days early at the eerie and mysterious opera house. There will be two floors of fun, including DJs all night and a costume contest. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, and the event is a big fundraiser for the Detroit Opera House. Go to hauntedinthehouse.com to find out more.

Slacktoberfest

If scary movies scream—pardon the pun—Halloween to you, the Cass City Cinema has you covered. They’re holding a horror movie marathon and costume contest on Saturday the 27th called “Slacktoberfest.” They’ll be screening some classics, including “Tunnel,” “Dead Alive,” “Night of the Living Dead” and “Down the Road.” Go to casscitycinema.com for more details.
