Things are about to get busier at the U-Haul Nabisco building. The steel is in, the doors are in and the floor is ready. Construction of the self-storage units on the third floor gets underway this week.
Prepping for self-storage
The third floor is prepped, primed and ready for self-storage room installation. The ceiling and many of the pillars have been scraped and repainted. The floor moldings have been installed and the gaps between the maple flooring and the walls filled in with a foam insulator. We installed 1” x 6” baseboard, which was a long and tedious process because we had to work around the pillars (and there are a lot of them on the floor) and vertical steam pipes.
Next up, we will begin laying out lines for self-storage rooms today. Construction could begin as early as Tuesday
More about ramps
The final cleanup of the concrete work on the loading/unloading ramps is finished. The remaining asphalt at the bottom of the ramps has been removed, leaving a clean line that transitions to the paver floor. The exterior steel handicap ramp is being galvanized and will arrive Wednesday or Thursday. We’ll install the railings and the decking, and hope to complete installation on Friday or Monday.
Showroom action
The HVAC unit has been installed in the showroom. Next, we will core-drill the ceiling and mount the condenser on the roof.
The windows for the upper wall in the showroom have been painted and are ready to be installed. Once the weather warms up we will begin installation! The high temps will drop into the teens this week and single-digit lows at night. The radiant flooring is holding its own, but this week will be a true test.
And, the Construction Department has given us some new renderings of what the showroom will look like. Check out the images in the gallery at the end of this post.
Northern lights
The electricians have installed emergency lighting in the north stairwell. All of the lights are on motion sensors.
No more “U-Hal”
The replacement “U” arrived and is back where it belongs on the north sign.
A bit of building history
Back in the day, packing was done on the fourth floor, where pans of biscuits and cookies fresh from the ovens on the sixth floor were delivered onto packing tables.
