U-Haul Reuses Historic Chicago Building to Deliver on the Demand for Moving and Self-Storage Facilities

Dec 27, 2014

In August 2014, U-Haul acquired the former William Randolph Hearst building, located off two major Chicago expressways, I-55 Stevenson and I-90/94 Kennedy. Now, U-Haul Moving and Storage of Bronzeville is an eye-catching property, sure to draw in do‑it‑yourself movers coming to the area. This three-story concrete building is situated on 1.24 acres of land with 159,413 square feet of building space.

Located at 2601 South LaSalle Street, U-Haul Moving and Storage of Bronzeville is in close proximity to several neighborhoods that have gained popularity recently as strong residential communities. Renovations are under way to bring this historic building to U‑Haul Company standards, while keeping the charm of its former life. By reusing this historic building, U-Haul is able to reduce the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials… which helps cities, like Chicago, reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

The new showroom at U-Haul Moving and Storage of Bronzeville will serve as a museum featuring displays from both U-Haul Company as well as Economy Folding Box Corporation, which purchased the Hearst building in the early 1960’s. The museum will include a printing press, a tool and die machine and various box art featuring products made by Economy Folding Box Corporation. U-Haul will include old 4×8 van trailers and vintage decals to showcase the Company’s long history. There are even plans to display a rotating U-Haul truck on the roof!

Other renovations to this property include the following.

  • Freight elevators have been serviced and updated.

  • The current showroom has been newly painted.

  • Restroom have been painted and new tile will be installed.

  • Roof drains have installed and existing drains have been repaired.

  • A new roof is under construction and expected to be completed before the new year.
