Alex Cavazos: Better With Training

Jan 20, 2017

Team U-Haul knows what it takes to keep our trucks and trailers running smoothly. Since the launch of the U-Haul Technician Training Program, shop team members are better equipped to keep up with this ever-changing field. Thanks to these team members, U-Haul equipment is serviced efficiently and then is back on the road, helping customers with their moving adventure.

To honor their contributions to the Company, U-Haul News will be highlighting team members who hold the title of U-Haul Trained Master Technician. To earn this title, a technician must complete all of the training courses. Additionally, they must pass the mastery exams in each of the specialty areas of the program. It’s the pinnacle of all U-Haul technicians, and not everyone can claim this prestigious distinction. Alex Cavazos, pre-inspection specialist at Kar-Go Repair Center of San Antonio, is one who can.

Meet Alex

Team member, Alex Cavazos took full advantage of U-Haul’s Technician Training program and since has picked up a numerous amount of skills.

I have been working at U-Haul for 12 years, and every day I encounter something different.

I started working on cars when I was about 16 years old. My approach then was mostly “take a guess at which part to replace and hope that will fix the problem.” As I got older and vehicle technology improved, I learned to follow the rules of diagnosing by using scan tools and other diagnostic equipment to better troubleshoot.

When I arrived at U-Haul, my mechanical skills were very basic, but I found out quickly that U-Haul provided free schooling and training. I was blown away by this. Most companies want to charge you for additional training. and here I am with all these free courses and programs right at my fingertips. I can’t imagine anyone not taking advantage of programs such as the Technician Training Program.

I am proud to say that U-Haul helped me improve my diagnostic ability beyond my expectations.

Encouraging others

Thanks to the training programs, there is nothing Alex can’t do.

Today, I am by far a better technician than I ever was. All of this came from the different programs, specifically the Technician Training Program. It’s made me faster at diagnosing equipment, and helped me understand more of the electrical systems in all of our vehicles.

With all these new trucks, there is a lot more data. When you hook up a scan tool, there is a lot more you can see. Others would benefit from the Technician Training Program because the courses will help them keep up with the changing fleet. I help and encourage all my fellow team members at Shop 127 to follow in my footsteps.

I am the one they come to with questions about the courses or even just learning how to sign in. There is nothing more rewarding than your team members asking for your help in resolving a problem.

Being able to diagnose and repair a problem effectively saves U-Haul money. In the long run, that creates better pay and benefits. Because no technician wants to make less than the guy at the pizza place!
