Migration Trends: Victoria is No. 8 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Jun 20, 2018

Victoria is the No. 8 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, rising two spots from its ranking last year.

Victoria’s one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017 remained virtually the same year-over-year while it continued to be one of the top 10 busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers.

“Victoria has been going through a major revitalization,” stated Michelle Benson, U-Haul Company of Vancouver and Vancouver Island president. “Vancouver has become a real-estate hot spot, so homes and apartment prices there are skyrocketing. Since Victoria is right off the water and is only an hour-and-a-half ferry ride from Vancouver, it’s a great alternative.

“Victoria is a relaxing community with beautiful hiking trials and plenty of outdoor activities. I think it will continue to be a destination for DIY movers as long as the cost of living remains low.”

U-Haul has two Company-owned stores and 13 independent neighborhood dealers currently operating in the Victoria city limits. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Victoria at uhaul.com/locations.

Moving to Victoria

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Vancouver is the No. 10 Destination City, followed by Kitchener at No. 9. Find Destination Cities 11-50 below and be sure to check back throughout the countdown.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul released its top 25 Canadian Growth Cities for 2017 in January.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 10 Canadian provinces and 50 states in the U.S. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.
