Migration Trends: Ottawa is No. 4 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Jun 26, 2018

Ottawa is the No. 4 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, rising one spot from its ranking last year.

Ottawa saw a 7 percent year-over-year increase in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017 to remain one of the five busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers. U-Haul named Ottawa its No. 1 Canadian Growth City for 2017 in January.

“Ottawa is known as an affordable, clean and safe city. Do-it-yourself movers from all around the world are choosing Ottawa as their new home,” stated U-Haul Company of Western Quebec president Claude Boucher, whose territory includes Ottawa and parts of southeastern Ontario.

“Ottawa is the hub for Canadian government institutions, vibrant technology start-ups, tourism industries and much more. It is seeing an increase in young professionals and has defined itself as an energetic and buzzing capital. Millions of visitors come to Ottawa every year. It’s clear that some are staying.”

U-Haul has three Company-owned stores and 17 independent neighborhood dealers currently operating in the Ottawa city limits. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Ottawa at uhaul.com/locations.

Moving Season in Ottawa

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Vancouver is the No. 10 Destination City, Kitchener 9, Victoria 8, Hamilton 7, Montreal 6 and London 5. Find Destination Cities 11-50 below and be sure to check back throughout the countdown.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 10 Canadian provinces and 50 states in the U.S. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.
