At an event full of fun activities and recreational toys, U-Haul Co. of Eastern Iowa (Co. 932) utilized the Cedar Rapids RV and Boat Show as a forum to teach safe practices to anyone who tows a trailer, vehicle or other device.
“We try to participate in community engagement events as often as possible,” stated Craig Ash, Co. 932 marketing company president. “Representing U-Haul at local events allows us to connect with people on a more personal level while increasing brand recognition.”
Over the course of three days in February, attendees had the opportunity to explore a showroom filled to the brim with classic campers to the newest speedboats.
Yet one of the main points of interest was the Marco Garcia Trailer Demonstrator (MGTD), an interactive U-Haul teaching tool that shows safe trailering techniques – namely the importance of loading trailers heavier in the front (toward the tongue) at a 60/40 weight ratio.

Ash refers to the exhibit as a “conversation starter.”
“The MGTD is what brings the crowds in,” Ash said. “It’s an attention-grabbing tool that helps to introduce folks to the full scope of what we do here at U-Haul. In addition to being a fun and exciting demonstration that kids and adults enjoy, it is a learning experience.”
Community Education and Successful Interactions
While the MGTD is the focal point, Ash uses these events to introduce and educate others about all things U-Haul, from safe-trailering practices to hitch installations and moving services.
“Another key point during community education events for us is to remind people, especially small business owners, that they can make supplemental income from everything they are learning by serving their neighbors as an authorized U-Haul dealer,” Ash said.
“Though there is hard work involved (setting up for educational events), it’s difficult to imagine rewards as great as these. Making the effort to connect with your community shows your dedication to their safety and success.”
