U-Haul 2016 Destination City No. 3: San Antonio

May 24, 2017

San Antonio registers as the No. 3 U-Haul U.S. Destination City for 2016, according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report.

Arrivals were up year-over-year as San Antonio rose two spots from its 2015 ranking, solidifying its status as one of the busiest U.S. markets for incoming U-Haul trucks.

U-Haul Destination Cities are ranked according to the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul truck rentals to a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities do not account for departing traffic and thus do not necessarily reflect growth like U-Haul Growth Cities. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of do-it-yourself movers coming into a community.

U-Haul has 13 Company-owned stores and 50 independent neighborhood dealers within the city limits, and also offers many more locations to fulfill the needs of suburbs outside San Antonio. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in San Antonio at uhaul.com/locations.

Mayor Taylor Sees Progress

“Projections estimate that one million more people will move to San Antonio over the next 25 years, so those who are moving here now are ahead of the curve – and for good reason,” San Antonio Mayor Ivy R. Taylor says. “San Antonio is an affordable city to live in; business is booming, especially in key industries like IT, cybersecurity and medical, and (San Antonio) has great warm weather.”

“San Antonio is in a revitalization program for the downtown area,” adds Sam Molina, U-Haul Company of San Antonio East president. “Our downtown is attracting more residents that will live in new townhomes and condos that are built in our old refurbished buildings.”

San Antonio is the No. 3 U-Haul U.S. Destination City for 2016

The seventh most populated U.S. city has a strong military presence, which also drives U-Haul business.

“Army medics and Armed Forces medics are trained at Ft. Sam Houston,” Molina says. “All Air Force basic training and pilot training is done in San Antonio. The northeast area has grown with the new military hospital and military member housing. Brand-name companies and corporations are moving here. Our city is doing a good job of soliciting new business and is expanding to the edge of small towns nearby.”

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.

What They are Saying about San Antonio

“Our city’s history spans nearly 300 years. Our community culture is open, inviting and accepting. We are home to the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Texas, our five Spanish colonial missions; and we have the 5-time NBA Championship Spurs. San Antonio is definitely the city to be in.” — Ivy R. Taylor, Mayor, San Antonio
