Migration Trends: Vancouver is No. 10 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Jun 18, 2018

Vancouver is the No. 10 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, falling three spots from its previous ranking.

Vancouver saw a 29 percent year-over-year decrease in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017, but still remained one of the top 10 busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers.

“Vancouver is one of the most popular places to live in British Columbia. It’s no surprise to see a large number of U-Haul trucks continuing to arrive,” stated Michelle Benson, U-Haul Company of Vancouver and Vancouver Island president. “It has a unique vibe and is one of the friendliest cities. The sense of community is great, and new residents don’t take long to merge into their own neighborhood.

“Vancouver has all the trendy restaurants, and the city is bike-friendly. Environmental responsibility is important here, and it’s clear when you look at the city infrastructure and new developments. People are really attracted to the outdoor activities as well.”

U-Haul has one Company-owned store and 16 independent neighborhood dealers currently operating in the Vancouver city limits. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Vancouver at uhaul.com/locations.

Moving Season in Vancouver

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul released its top 25 Canadian Growth Cities for 2017 in January.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 10 Canadian provinces and 50 states in the U.S. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.
