Migration Trends: Calgary is No. 2 U-Haul Canadian Destination City

Calgary is the No. 2 Canadian Destination City according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report, maintaining its spot from last year’s rankings.

Calgary saw a 2 percent year-over-year increase in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017 to remain one of the busiest cities for incoming traffic among do-it-yourself movers.

“Calgary is also the best of both worlds. There is a perfect balance of country and city, and Calgarians appreciate the small-town feel and big-city opportunities,” stated, Vern Jardine, U-Haul Company of Southern Alberta president.

“The Calgary job market is leading the country, and our economy is strong. The city is also fairly young. The University of Calgary and Mount Royal University educate thousands of young people every year. With such a young population, there are tons of events and festivals catered to young people and families. There is a new event almost every weekend.”

Moving Season in Calgary

U-Haul International, headquartered in Arizona, is counting down its top 10 Canadian Destination Cities as a prelude to “Moving Day” on July 1, one of the busiest dates for residential moves in Canada, and specifically Quebec. The No. 1 Destination City will be announced on June 29 via Twitter @uhaul and on myuhaulstory.com.

Vancouver is the No. 10 Destination City, Kitchener 9, Victoria 8, Hamilton 7, Montreal 6, London 5, Ottawa 4 and Edmonton 3. Find Destination Cities 11-50 below and be sure to check back throughout the countdown.

Rankings are based on the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul trucks into a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of DIY movers coming into a community. They do not account for departing one-way U-Haul trucks, and thus do not necessarily signify growth like U-Haul Growth Cities rankings.

U-Haul released its top 25 Canadian Growth Cities for 2017 in January.
