Countdown for the weekend, with only 2 hours left before the 5 o’clock whistle blows — TGIF DETROIT!!!
Looks like it’s going to be an overcast but fairly nice weekend with the possibility of a few showers on Saturday and Sunday – But rain will never stop Detroiter’s from enjoying the weekend.
Here are my top three choices for a fabulous fun filled weekend to enjoy with family or friends – which gives you something to do each day!
Fun Day Friday:
What better way to start the weekend off right than with a Free Rockin Roll Concert in Detroit! Here’s your chance to get out under the stars and listen to a FREE concert along the beautiful GM Riverfront Plaza on Friday night. This week’s show features The Sweet, who sing songs such as “Ballroom Blitz” and “Fox on the Run,” and The Tubes, whose songs include “She’s a Beauty” and “Talk to You Later.” This is one of your last chances to catch a free concert this summer, because next week is the last one. The concerts run from 8 p.m.-10 p.m., and admission is free.
Viewing space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure to grab an early dinner or happy hour at your favorite place, and bring along some blankets to snuggle in with your significant other or some lawn chairs to just sit back and relax.
Social Saturday:
Want to educate your children while still having fun? I found this new exhibit that opened last week at the University of Michigan Detroit Center which is showcasing an exhibit called Work Detroit presents: America! This exhibit focuses on artists re-purposing all things American – perfect fit – I give this exhibit a thumbs up!!! What better way to learn about America, art and conservation and none the less – all for free! Work Detroit presents: America! exhibit is open Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 4 pm.
Sorry its Sunday:
Not anymore – let’s just forget that Sunday is the day before Monday and that we all have to go back to work – which is why I chose to save the best fun filled activity for last…. the Annual Detroit Caribbean Cultural Festival 2012 in our very own neighborhood at the New Center Park! This year the event moved to the newly renovated New Center Park and it is a milestone year commemorating the 50th year of independence for both Caribbean nations of Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica. The festival hours are noon – 11 pm. This festival is open to all and includes live performances from local and international artists, flavorful and authentic Caribbean food, souvenirs, and activities for the entire family to enjoy. Mai Tai here I come!
