Last Wednesday night we had our first major snowstorm, but Thursday was no snow day at the U-Haul Nabisco building. The steel doors for the storage units we will be installing on the third floor arrived bright and early…before the lot had been plowed.
We had to move the load into the building through the train loading dock. We moved the snow out of the way with the Bobcat. The pallets were 95” high; the dock door is 96” tall. The only way to get the pallets inside was to transfer the load from the forklift on the ground to the pallet jack on the dock. Everyone at the site pitched in to help. The unsolicited teamwork was great and very much appreciated.
Showroom shaping up
Painting the showroom got underway this past weekend. We are painting on the weekends so we don’t delay the work of the other contractors working in the room. The ceiling and walls have been sprayed, the truss overhead is now a brilliant orange and the bucket, car and track, and the tank on the platform have been spray-painted black.
In addition, the restroom is now tied into the main drain and has hot water. Repairs and glass replacement on the showroom windows continues.
A bit of building history
When he commissioned the building of the National Biscuit Company baking facilities in the 1920s, CEO Adolphus Green went to great lengths to ensure that the working conditions were ideal for his people. For example, on the seventh floor of our Detroit building was a restaurant where employees could purchase lunch, at cost, a men’s smoking room and a women’s rest and recreation room.
This blog was created to let the community know that U-Haul is in Detroit, and to share our plans with you and to get input from the community. We want to hear from you. Tell us what you like and don’t like about our posts, building plans or anything else you want to share about Detroit. We are excited to be part of the Detroit community and want to learn from you!
Next post, 1/7. Happy New Year!
