Moving Detroit: Detailing and Reusing Old Pipe 5-08-13

May 8, 2013

Detail work is what we’re about this week in Detroit at U-Haul Moving and Self-Storage of New Center. That, and reusing some salvaged pipe to create a showroom display.

Showroom Back Wall - Ready for DisplaysReuse spiffs up the showroom

We’re all about keeping and reusing original materials, particularly in the showroom. We took some salvaged sprinkler pipe, did some fabricating and painting, and created the back wall support for our menu board display. The menu board support and back-wall framework are installed. It turned out really well and definitely adds to the industrial look and feel of the showroom.

Showroom Counters - Carefully Drilling Holes

The showroom countertops were made from the reclaimed maple wood flooring that was removed from the building due to water damage. And they are spectacular. So it was with great care and precision that holes were drilled into the countertops for the data cables and credit card machines.

Manager's Office - Window Installed

The manager’s office window frame has been fabricated and installed. It was framed in with glass block; which is a good insulator. Glass block also provides a good source of light. The heat pump in the office was also installed.

Wood resurfaces on first floor

First Floor - Removing Tile to Reveal Wood Floor

Why anyone would want to cover up the original magnificent maple wood floors in this building is beyond me, but someone did on the first floor. We’ve gotten rid of the tile and will repair and refurbish to like-new status.

Fourth floor storage update

Fourth Floor Storage - Striking a Line

All of the rows of storage units are up. The crew is working on the interior walls of the last-row units, doing some trim work. They still have to build the 5 x 5 stacked lockers. The electricians are adding the lighting to the units.

We discovered some cracked windows, which will be replaced this week, and the deep sink in the fourth floor restroom got a major facelift; it looks brand new.

A bit of spring cleaning

Showroom Windows - Spring Cleaning

The showroom windows and the windows facing Baltimore Street have been scraped and cleaned, and look like new. The elevator lobby has been cleaned and we’ve started painting. The elevator has its primer coat.
