November marks Veterans Month at Humble Design, when the national nonprofit sponsored by U-Haul honors those who served by furnishing homes for veterans transitioning out of homeless shelters.

Home Reveal in Chicago

Humble Design Chicago, which has been addressing homelessness in the Windy City since 2017, participated in a special home reveal for local Army veteran Lillie on Veterans Day.

Lillie, 63, received a home makeover with beautiful furnishings donated by the Chicago community. Lillie served four years in Germany during her time with the Army, and recently found permanent housing after spending time at A Safe Haven homeless shelter.

Home Reveal in San Diego

Humble Design San Diego assisted Navy veteran James by providing furnishings and decorating services for his new residence.

James, 68, experienced homelessness for more than three years. He recently found permanent housing with the help of the San Diego Rescue Mission.

“U-Haul is honored to partner with Humble Design San Diego in service to their clients emerging out of homelessness,” said David Arias, U Haul Company of San Diego president. “We are particularly inspired to help them to serve veteran clients who have served our country and who deserve the respect and support of the community. We are humbled to work alongside our friends at Humble Design to create a beautiful home for James and are deeply grateful for his service to our country.”

Humble Design, which was founded in Detroit and operates in five cities thanks to the support of U-Haul and other sponsors, turns empty residences into a clean, dignified and welcoming homes thanks to the work of its caring volunteers and the gracious donations of community members.

Veteran Support

U-Haul, founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife in 1945, was built on the backs of service members. Veterans accounted for many of the first U-Haul Team Members, neighborhood dealers and customers, seeking to move their families to a better life after returning home from the war.

Today, U-Haul actively recruits veterans and gives them preference in the hiring process. Finally, U-Haul earmarks a significant portion of its community contributions to honoring veterans, and assisting veteran organizations and causes.
