In one of his most reflective and comprehensive interviews of recent years, U-Haul® CEO Joe Shoen sat down with Ken Coleman for a conversation that ranged from the Company’s origin story to Shoen’s advice on listening to the customer, workplace culture, leadership principles, and problem-solving while shaping a successful business.
The Shoen interview, conducted by the Ramsey Solutions® team at the U-Haul Midtown Campus in Phoenix, Ariz., is available through the Ramsey Network’s EntreLeadership® channel on YouTube.

The video is geared toward business owners who can learn from the dependability, growth and valued ideals of U-Haul. It opens with an introduction from famed financial expert Dave Ramsey: “Building a successful business is hard. Making sure it stays successful is even harder. And Joe Shoen has spent nearly 40 years learning that firsthand as the CEO of U-Haul.”
This year marks Shoen’s 40th as Chairman of U-Haul Holding Co. (formerly AMERCO), the parent company of U-Haul International. He was appointed to that role in 1986 and named the organization’s CEO in January 1987.
Today, Shoen has U-Haul positioned as the industry leader in do-it-yourself moving and self-storage with more than 24,000 rental locations across every U.S. state and Canadian province. Millions of customers rely on the essential services U-Haul provides every year, from residential mobility products and storage solutions to hitch installations and propane.
Shoen made headlines in March 2026 by offering a network-wide 1-Year Price Lock on all new self-storage rentals, catering to customer trust and shaking up an industry riddled by price gouging and bait-and-switch tactics utilized by big-name competitors.
Joe Shoen has led U-Haul for approximately half of its lifespan, with his father and founder L.S. “Sam” Shoen directing the first 41 years from the Company’s inception in 1945.
