The Ladies of Elegance, Inc. held its annual Pink, Black & White Affair on Aug. 14 in Chester, Va., as a way to honor cancer and sickle cell survivors and further an important cause. The night was filled with live music, dancing and, of course, elegance.
The black-tie event raised more than $14,000 for the American Cancer Society and Sickle Cell Association of Richmond.
While the Pink, Black & White Affair was nothing but glamour, staging the event took some heavy lifting.
“They do everything themselves,” said Angelia Henry, general manager of U-Haul Moving & Storage at Jefferson Davis Hwy. in Richmond. “They prepare all the food and rent all the tables. We donated a 26-foot U-Haul truck so they could pick up everything they needed and have it all in one place.”
This wasn’t the first time Sylvia Alexander-Wall, President of The Ladies of Elegance, called on U-Haul for assistance.
“The manager prior to me had done this once before and The Ladies of Elegance also contacted me last year when I became the manager,” Henry said. “I’ve had many family members who’ve suffered through cancer, so when Sylvia sent me the information, I became a huge supporter.”
Amy Cox, marketing company president of U-Haul Company of Richmond, got the donation request and was pleased to give her approval.
“We do a lot of donations for our community,” Cox explained. “When a manager calls and tells me it’s a good organization, I try to help the best I can.”
The Ladies of Elegance showed its appreciation by presenting U-Haul Moving & Storage at Jefferson Davis Hwy. with a plaque recognizing U-Haul Company’s ongoing support. U-Haul Company of Richmond was happy to lend a helping hand to the Pink, Black & White Affair and its cause to fight cancer.
“This makes it so much easier for them because they don’t get a lot of donations,” Henry said. “They end up purchasing everything, so it’s meaningful for us to do this.”
