Before I get into this week’s update…We’ve written a lot on our site about U-Haul Company’s history and commitment to the adaptive reuse of buildings. We’re also all about sustainable construction practices — reusing and recycling material whenever possible. For example, the steel used in our showroom-floor construction on the track studs and top track and bracing is 28.9% recycled, and the steel for the floor pan and pour stops is 77% recycled.
Now, here’s what happened over the past week and what we can look forward to.
Showroom Floor
K&K Construction completed the floor-pan installation and is cleaning up the basement for inspection on Tuesday. If all goes well, they plan to begin installation of the grid mesh for the radiant heat on Tuesday, with the goal of finishing by Friday. Once that is done, the concrete for the floor will be poured.
Elevators
Detroit Elevator turned over the south freight elevator over to us on Tuesday, as scheduled. We now have elevator access to every floor! This is huge news for our vendors and team members who have been climbing the stairs. Next up, the north elevators!
Another Basement Discovery
Bloggers JoeyGirl and Toni J toured the building last week and discovered two awesome wooden doors in the basement. The rooms behind these doors were once refrigerated and used to store the milk, eggs and butter used in the Nabisco baking process.
Lot
Now that the lot has been cleared of debris, the plan is to fix potholes, remove obstacles and make it user friendly. The west half of the lot (concrete part) will be leveled and low spots filled in with gravel.
What’s Your Sign?
And finally…we have a sign out front to let people (who don’t read this blog) know who we are and what we are doing with this grand building.
Stay tuned. Next update, Oct. 8.
