Moving Detroit: Signs of Summer – Rising Temps, Flowers and Asphalt – 5/20/13

U-Haul Nabisco Building Detroit Broom-Cleaning Lot 02

The signs of summer are all around us at U-Haul Moving and Storage of New Center. Temperatures are rising, flowers are blooming and the asphalt is flowing. Asphalt? Yep. Asphalt, blacktop, flexible concrete. (Sorry, got caught up in a “Beverly Hillbillies” moment.) Asphalt plants here in the East shut down for the winter and start up again in the late spring, when the temperature rises and the ground is no longer frozen. Now that the temperature is up, we’re prepping the parking lot for a facelift.

The lot’s been broom-cleaned to expose any broken concrete and other areas that may need repair before applying the asphalt. The north half of the lot and the small areal around the handicap ramp look good and will be resurfaced within the next two weeks. The south half of the lot needs repair before the asphalt can be applied. We’ll review proposals this week from asphalt companies on their fix.

HVAC on four means a cool summer inside

Climate-controlled storage means keeping the temperature inside warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. As the weather heat up outside, we’ll be ready. We’re installing the cabling and the duct work for the HVAC system on the fourth floor and the air handler is in place. We’ve also replaced some cracked windows.

The stackable framework is up for the 5×5 lockers. All that’s left is to add the sides and fit the lockers with doors. The crew is finishing some trim work around the floors and the electricians continue to hang the lights and install power supplies and motion sensors

The showroom counter area is nearing completion and looks sharp. The power pole has been been to the counter, all electric circuits are in and the pegboard behind the counter is in place. Everything is painted and looking 5-star

The cart rails have been installed and painted and the door company will be out this week to install a temporary door for the handicapped ramp. This will be temporary and replaced with a glass door.
