U-Haul 2016 Canadian Destination City No. 2: Calgary

Jun 29, 2017

Calgary chimes in as the No. 2 U-Haul Canadian Destination City for 2016, according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report.

Calgary saw a 10.2 percent drop in arrivals from 2015 when it was the No. 1 in the rankings, although it continues to be one of the busiest Canadian markets for incoming U-Haul trucks.

U-Haul Destination Cities are ranked according to the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul truck rentals to a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities do not account for departing traffic and thus do not necessarily reflect growth like U-Haul Growth Cities. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of do-it-yourself movers coming into a community.

Overcoming Challenges

“Calgary has always been a city that punches above its weight,” said Adam Legge, Calgary Chamber president and CEO. “You can feel the energy and famous entrepreneurial spirit in our streets, offices and tech incubators. Calgary is a place of immense opportunity. Even through two years of a very challenging economy, we’ve remained a destination of choice. We’re thrilled to be the No. 2 destination for people taking a U-Haul to live, work and play in our city.”

U-Haul has two Company-owned stores and 31 independent dealers within the city limits. It also offers many more locations to fulfill the needs of suburbs outside Calgary. Find U-Haul truck and trailer sharing locations in Calgary at uhaul.com/locations.

“Being a U-Haul dealer is an attractive option for business owners,” stated Vern Jardine, U-Haul Company of Southern Alberta president. “Our do-it-yourself moving equipment and self-storage gets new customers through the door and helps those customers become part of the community. I’ve seen more interest in our partnerships because U-Haul is always ready to assist and support our dealer locations.”

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The geographical coverage from more than 21,000 U-Haul locations provides a comprehensive overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck rental transactions that occur annually.

What They Are Saying About Calgary

“Calgary appeals to all people. It may be approaching a population of 3 million, but the city still has a small-town feel. Calgarians are polite and always welcome ‘outsiders’ to become part of our lifestyle and community. Calgary is undergoing a feverous expansion, which is opening the doors for future Calgarians to call it home.” — Vern Jardine, U-Haul Company of Southern Alberta president
