U.S. Growth City No. 9: Manteca’s Small-Town Values Attract

Jan 26, 2016

U-Haul Truck Arrivals in Manteca Climbed 60 Percent Last Year

Manteca is living up to its nickname of “The Family City,” adding more branches to its family tree with each moving truck that rolls into the Central Valley hot spot.

Manteca ranked No. 9 on the U-Haul Top 10 U.S. Growth Cities for 2015. Growth rankings are determined by the net gain of incoming one-way U-Haul truck rentals versus outgoing rentals for the past calendar year.

“I’m not surprised Manteca is in the top 10,” Mayor Steve DeBrum said. “Over the past couple of decades, Manteca leaders have focused on balanced growth – expanding the city’s residential, commercial and industrial bases. The goal has been to provide quality, affordable housing and local jobs that help build a vibrant community.”

U-Haul locations in Manteca saw 56.3 percent of truck rental customers coming into the city as opposed leaving. It welcomed 60 percent more U-Haul arrivals year-over-year, while its departures were up 36 percent over the same period.

The overall spike in U-Haul traffic made the Central Valley destination a much busier place for do-it-yourself movers.

Manteca is nestled in the San Joaquin Valley 15 miles south of Stockton, 17 miles northwest of Modesto and 77 miles east of San Francisco. Within a short drive, Mantecans can take advantage of the Bay area nightlife or the peaceful surroundings of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

“We have a strong recreation base, and are proud of the variety of sports and recreational opportunities that exist,” DeBrum added. “We are proud of the hundreds of volunteers who help to make this city a desirable place to live, work and play.”

While U-Haul migration trends don’t correlate directly to population or economic growth, the growth cities data is a strong gauge of how well cities are attracting and keeping residents. Quotable

  • “The cost of living is much lower than the Bay Area, so many people move here to raise families and commute to the big cities. The downtown area has many small businesses and old-style buildings. Every year for patriotic holidays, Main Street and Yosemite Avenue are lined with American flags down both sidewalks. Manteca is home base for The Not Forgotten Memorial Day Weekend, the largest such event on the West Coast.” — Chris Trudell, President of U-Haul Company of West Sacramento
  • “We have many local developers who have continued through the tough times to build. Our city is known as ‘The Family City’ and many people move here to provide a slower pace for their family. Our schools are excellent and there are many choices for children to attend specialty charter schools. We are also very welcoming and friendly to those moving into our community.” — Joann Beattie, Executive Director of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce
  • “Manteca offers an ideal setting for corporate expansion and affordable living. Plus, residents, visitors and employees have the opportunity to venture into the outdoors and enjoy big-city amenities in a country lifestyle.” — Virginia Camacho, CEO of Manteca Convention & Visitors Bureau
