Yep, the NBC-Nabisco building has a new name, U-Haul Moving & Storage of Detroit. While it may not be the catchiest of names, it sums up our revitalization effort: U-Haul isn’t just in Detroit, we are of Detroit. Let us know what you think.
Lots of progress to report in this post, plus an intriguing find in the basement – more on that below.
The water has been turned on in the building and – even more important – we have functioning restrooms now. That may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a welcome improvement to the revitalization crew working in the building.
Power is now available on every floor. We’re checking out the air handlers on each floor. Air handlers move heat around the floors, and the ones in the showroom and the first two floors are operating. This is good news, since our goal is to begin providing basic truck- and trailer-rental services by winter.
Action in the basement includes the removal of a dumbwaiter AND the discovery of a 63-foot underground tunnel. There’s a sealed room at the end of the tunnel, but we haven’t been able to get into it yet. Perhaps it’s a secret vault of Detroit’s notorious Purple Gang. Maybe it’s a treasure trove of well-preserved baked goods. As soon as we open the room up, we’ll share what we find. What do you think is inside the room?
Stay tuned…
