Getting Active: U-Haul Raises Nearly $17K for Charity at 4th Annual Active Day

Oct 8, 2019

PHOENIX — U-Haul Active Day, in its fourth year, built upon a company-wide trend of physical fitness, healthy living choices and charitable giving with events held across the U.S. and Canada on or about Sept. 21.

In Phoenix, Team Members from the U-Haul Midtown Campus, the Tech Center in Tempe, and the Glendale Manufacturing Company gathered at Steele Indian School Park for a Saturday morning of games, camaraderie and a walk/run/bike of nearly three miles.

Active Day Appreciation

“I just love every single thing about this event,” Jessica Lopez, U-Haul Chief of Staff, shared with a crowd of about 600 at the park. “Every year, I look forward to today. It’s the one day where all of us – all across the United States and Canada – get out, have team camaraderie, meet families and have fun, all while doing something good for your health.

“Never take your health for granted. You only have one life. This isn’t a dress rehearsal. … We care about all of you. We are so grateful to have all of you and your families here.”

A winding path through the park brought participants back to a field with a blow-up playground area for children, vendor stations with healthy food and drink options, and a tent showcasing the nonprofit Humble Design Fueled by U-Haul.

Humble Design, with offices in Detroit, Chicago, Seattle and San Diego, focuses on single-parent families and veterans emerging from homeless shelters by providing donated furnishings and decorating services to help make their new homes warm, welcoming and dignified.

Meaningful Charity Impact

T-shirt purchases and monetary gifts from the 5,200 Team Members who signed up for U-Haul Active Day this year resulted in $16,872 donated to Company-backed charities. Humble Design got $15,269 and the Canadian Red Cross got $1,603.

“If you purchased any of the swag, a portion of that purchase went to support two of our charity partners,” U-Haul Vice President of Communications Sebastien Reyes stated. “Many of you went above and beyond, and gave out of the own goodness of your hearts. … Thank you.”

Marketing company offices throughout the U-Haul network planned and executed a variety of activities to meet with wishes of their teams, including bowling tournaments, hikes and obstacle courses.

U-Haul is already looking forward to Active Day 2020! Thanks to all who participated.
