What’s Happening in New Center?

Aug 22, 2012

This might make a lot of you feel old, but it’s been 30 years since “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” opened in theaters. For those of us who remember seeing it when it first came out, it’s hard to believe it’s been that long. While I deal with the fact that I’m getting old, you can make plans to check out “E.T.” tonight at New Center Park.

The 1982 classic is this week’s FREE Wednesday Night at the Movies feature. The movie starts at 9:30 p.m., but you can arrive earlier if you want to have dinner in the park, as food and beverages are available starting at 8 p.m. Remember, no outside food or drinks are allowed.

So, bring some lawn chairs or a comfy blanket and reminisce about the first time you saw “E.T.,” or perhaps bring your kids or grandkids and introduce them to the lovable alien. It’ll be a good time to sit back and relax, turn off your cell phone (here comes the obligatory “E.T. phone home” joke), and find out how people “phoned home” 30 years ago (there it was). (For those of you who don’t know, it involved a Speak & Spell, a coffee can and a record player.)

Comerica Park
Wednesday is Children’s Health Night as the Tigers take on the Blue Jays at Comerica Park.

If you prefer a baseball game to a movie, head over to Comerica Park tonight to watch the Tigers take on the Blue Jays, and help out a good cause at the same time! It’s Children’s Health Night, and if you order your tickets here, $4 of every ticket sold will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation.

Tomorrow night, New Center Park hosts Alfresco Jazz & Blues. This week, you can hear the Jesse Palter Quartet. Click here to listen to their rendition of the classic song, “So Happy Together.”

Claude VonStroke
DJ Claude VonStroke performs on Saturday night in New Center Park.

And this weekend is your last chance to catch Camp Hi-Fi. Come out to New Center Park on Saturday night as local favorite DJ Claude VonStroke performs what promises to be an energetic show.

Have you been to any events at New Center Park this summer? Let us know what you thought of them, or tell us what you plan to attend in the next couple weeks as the summer event series winds down.
