No, I’m not talking about the Isley Brothers’ top selling 1975 album or Glenn Fry’s 1984 hit single featured in “Beverly Hills Cop.” I’m talking about heat in the U-Haul Moving and Storage of Detroit building. We have it…and it feels good!
First, we ran steam to the radiant heat mesh under the new showroom floor, then the heat was turned on in the rest of the building. Each floor is valved, so we can treat each one independently, and we had people from Detroit Thermal and John E. Green positioned on each floor to monitor the system. The best indicator of success – the thermometer on the first floor climbed to a welcome 50 degrees.
A Special Shout Out
We want to give a special shout out to the crew from Roman Brick. They went above and beyond last Wednesday to complete the restoration and repair of the brick road outside the entrance to the showroom. A small section is asphalt and needed to be replaced.
The asphalt company originally told us we had until the week of Christmas to make repairs. Last Monday they informed us that if we wanted to make repairs, we had to do it by Wednesday because the asphalt plants close after Wednesday for the rest of the year.
Roman Brick stopped what they were doing at another job site and worked all day and into the night. The road looks great and will probably last another 100 years!
Electrifying Results
From top to bottom, the electricians have been hard at work. They’ve installed all of the disconnect panels for the north side of the building, run wire up to the seventh floor and, on Friday, tied in to city power. They’ve also run to the roof for both of the new U-Haul signs and completed the electrical for the showroom bathroom.
Hands-On CEO
Joe Shoen was here Wednesday, going over final plans for the showroom –paint, colors, etc. – and what we are going to do in the different areas of the building. Joe is very much a hands-on CEO and takes a special interest in the Company’s revitalization projects.
Odds and Ends
The replacement for the exterior hatch for the tunnel room has been installed; the old wooden handicap ramp is gone and we are laying out the new handicap ramp; the first wall has been poured for the loading/unloading area and the second wall has been formed for the handicap ramp.
The new signs have shipped and should be in M.D. Lighting Sign Service’s hands before the end of the week. Once they inspect/check them out, installation will get underway.
