U-Haul Teams up with Forgotten Harvest

Jan 29, 2013

Forgotten Harvest certainly didn’t forget about feeding many families in the Detroit metropolitan community over the holiday season, with a little help from U-Haul.   As U-Haul gets closer to opening U-Haul Moving and Storage Midtown, we have been working at establishing partnerships with non-profits who have a direct impact on the community of Detroit.  Forgotten Harvest was one of the top charities on our list to consider especially since U-Haul Company’s community relations efforts focus primarily on food, clothing and shelter initiatives.

Forgotten Harvest, established in 1990 to fight hunger and waste, focuses its mission on driving hunger from the Detroit metropolitan community by rescuing surplus, prepared and perishable food and donating it to emergency food providers.

U-Haul donated 200 turkey certificates to Forgotten Harvest to help them feed families who are less fortunate this holiday season.  Forgotten Harvest was able to provide over 5,000 meals to people in need from a variety of programs such as the Arab Caldean Council, New Breed Ministries, Hazelcrest Senior Center and a variety of home deliveries where elderly and shut-ins live.

They wouldn’t have been able to complete this mission without the help of the many volunteers  who assisted in loading up the prepared meals,  groceries and turkeys that were delivered to the needy families throughout the Detroit metropolitan community.

Forgotten Harvest provides services to over 260 recipient agencies which consist of emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and domestic shelters, children’s homes, senior centers and group homes.  Forgotten Harvest covers an amazing 2,000-square miles per day.

Hats off to Forgotten Harvest!

Named America’s largest food rescue during their fiscal year 2011 – 2012, for rescuing a record 42 million pounds of food – WOW!

Forgotten Harvest covers 2,000 miles of area a day.

Forgotten Harvest rescues food by collecting surplus, prepared and perishable food from a variety of sources such as grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors, and other Health Department-approved sources.  This donated food – that would otherwise go to waste – is delivered free of charge to emergency food providers throughout metro Detroit.

U-Haul is looking forward to working with Forgotten Harvest and supporting their mission of helping feed the families throughout the Detroit metropolitan community.

Do you know a non-profit in  Detroit you think U-Haul should consider working with? Please let us know!
