Building Green

The ‘U-Haul Building Green Initiative’ begins with identifying and implementing design strategies that are kind to both the environment and the immediate community in which we serve. This U-Haul initiative is based on the same principles of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System.

The majority of our locations currently employ these principles:

  • Reduce – Water consumption with low-flow aerators and other efficient plumbing devices
  • Reduce – Water consumption with efficient irrigation systems and by planting native-landscape species which require infrequent watering
  • Reduce – Energy consumption with energy efficient lighting, HVAC systems and day-lighting. To date, energy-efficient projects save more than 55,000,000 kWh every year.
  • Reuse – Reclaimed rainwater with permeable ground cover parking lots
  • Reuse –  Building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction, and helps local cities diminish an unwanted supply of abandoned buildings
  • Reuse – Sustainable modular storage built from retired truck van bodies, eliminating energy and resources required for new construction, and decreasing amount of materials sent to local landfills
  • Recycle – Building and operation materials such as steel, aluminum, wood, paper, glass, and plastics

U-Haul Green Building

 

With more than 1,100 convenient locations and growing, U-Haul Centers with propane refill stations collectively make up one of the largest propane dispensing infrastructures in North America for refilling BBQ grills, heaters, recreational vehicles, alternative-fuel vehicles and a range of other appliances. Propane, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is one of our nation’s most versatile domestically produced, clean-burning energy sources.
